The Thermodynamics skill allows you to 'overload' most active modules on a per-cycle basis, giving them a significant fixed percent boost in functionality or capability that is listed in their attributes tab. The overloaded module also inflicts approximately the listed amount of damage (modified by Thermodynamics skill level and the heat-sinking effect of any adjacent offline modules) on itself and on nearby modules in the same rack. Damage does not affect the function of a module, but a module that has taken 100% damage will go permanently offline until repaired at a station. Modules with less than 100% damage can be repaired in-flight (while inactive) using Nanite Repair Paste.
The bonus effect from a module overload is currently not affected by any skills; Thermodynamics only affects the damage they take.
Note that as of Dominion, the requirements to train Thermodynamics have been drastically reduced. It formerly required Energy Management V, now down to a mere III.
