R&D Agents

Access to R&D agents works just like with any other agents - they belong to a corporation, and you need a certain standing with that corporation to access them. Most corporations with R&D agents will also have shitty courier missions and kill missions to grind faction on. You will want to at least use Level 3 agents, as the amount of RP per day you get is based on the agent level, which means grinding to 5-7 standing.

Every agent can potentially research one of up to three field sciences, but your corresponding field science skill must be equal or greater than the agent's level. There are also standings requirements that apply to the corp, and occasionally, the faction that the agent is a part of. For example, to earn RP for Electronic Engineering datacores from a level III agent, you must meet the standings requirements for that agent and have a minimum of Electronic Engineering III.

Each agent may only research one field at at time and you may only use one agent. The Research Project Management skill enables you to add one additional agent per level. Training this skill to IV is probably the most optimal use of your time as training to V is a 40 day wait for most characters.

Any time you stop researching with an agent, you automatically lose any accumulated RP with that agent. Before you stop using an agent for any kind of research, make sure that you first buy out the datacores that you're entitled to. Research Points are not transferrable to any other field sciences.

Research Points

The agent you are researching with will give you a certain number of Research Points per day. You "buy" datacores with them.

These RP were once used to get Tech 2 BPOs via a lottery system, but this is no longer the case as of Revelations 2.1.

Here is the formula for calculating the number of RP you will recieve per day

RP/day = Field multiplier * (1 + (Agent's Effective Quality/100)) * ((Field Skill Level + Agent's Level)^2)

Field multiplier - for some reason, certain fields give more RP than others, this makes no difference as to your odds of getting a BPO, in fact it probably makes them lower by attracting people that think more RP==more chance of BPO.

Agent's Effective Quality - Ranges from -20 to 20, and modifies your daily RP by a percentage equal to the quality, each level of Negotiation raises this value by 5. IMPORTANT: WHENEVER YOU TRAIN ANOTHER LEVEL IN NEGOTIATION YOU MUST START A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR AGENT(S) BEFORE THE GAME WILL RECOGNIZE THE INCREASED RP/DAY VALUE. YOU CAN DO THIS REMOTELY.

Example:

So if we research Graviton Physics (2x Multiplier) with a Level 4 Q18 Agent, with Graviton Physics Skill at 4 and Negotiations at 4 we receive:

(2 * (1 + ( (18+(4*5)) / 100)) * (4 + 4)^2) = 2 * 1.38 * 64 = 176.64 RP/day

If we train Negotiation to 5 (Rank 2), this becomes:

2 * 1.43 * 64 = 183.04 RP/day

If we train Graviton Physics to 5 (Rank 5) this becomes:

2 * 1.38 * 81 = 223.56 RP/day

So as you can see, generally it is more worthwhile to train up the field skill over Negotiation. However,if you decide to research 5 different fields with Research Project Management 4, it is probably a better idea to train each field skill to 4 and train up Negotiation to 5

Every day your agent will offer you a stupid courier mission. Rejecting or failing this mission has no consequence. If you complete it, you get double the RP for that day. If you are around, you might as well do the mission, but usually you won't be hanging out in regions with R&D agents, so generally you shouldn't bother.

Field Specific Skills

To begin research, you must train a field specific skill. Each field specific skill requires Science 5 and either Electronics, Engineering or Mechanic trained to level 5. As far as efficiency goes, a Mechanic skill is probably less worthwhile, since fittings skills are generally more useful to have at 5.

When Eve still included the T2 BPO Lottery mechanic, the predictable BPOs tab was a reference to what BPOs CCP is currently seeding. As of Revelations 2.1, all fields now show nothing predictable. CCP has made multiple statements indicating that the T2 BPO lottery will never return.

If you cannot find the agent you are looking for below (you may want to look for a level 3 agents, or maybe I misspelled something)

   * Click People & Places Icon (left side menu)
   * Change the "Search Type" to corporation
   * In the "Search String" type in one of the above named corps (you don't need to type it all in).
   * When the box appears with the corp listed, right click on it and select "show info".
   * In the Corp information box click the "Agents" tab
   * Click the expand arrow (right hand side) on the R&D line.
   * Expand the window fully and you will see a list of R&D agents and where they are.
   * Click "show info" and go to the agent info tab
   * Here you will see a listing of the fields the agent researches and your required standing

Recommended skillpath to follow

As of Apocrypha, this is now entirely obsolete. The section is still useful as a "what to train" primer, but character builds get you nothing at all.

Best builds post-Revelations are possibly Minmatar - Industry - Prospector for Science 5/Engineering 3 or Minmatar - Industry - Engineer for Science 4/Engineering 5/Research 3 if you are going for an Engineering requirement field.

The true best build post-revelations is gallente - intaki - reborn - industry - engineer: +3int +2mem. This gets you both mechanic 5 and engineering 5, more applicable starting skillpoints than any other path. You have decent int, mem and cha. Your per/will sucks but if you only use this character as a disposable R&D alt, you'll never train per/will skills. As of Apocrypha, if you do decide to use this character you can remap its skill points once every year.

Implants are cheap enough now that you should always use +3s (int, mem, cha) for empire alts that will never get podded.

Learning skills (Advanced Memory IV, Advanced Intelligence IV, Learning IV, Basic Charisma IV - or Advanced Charisma IV if you are going to do Research project management 5)

Let EVEMon choose the learning skills for you, the above is probably a bit much if you're only doing a month or two of total training.
